Welcome to Question of the Day, Friday where I answer your hearing healthcare and audio technology question.

What is a hearing aid specialist, and how can they help you?

Hearing aid specialists are licensed to work with the hearing impaired.  They can conduct a hearing test and fit hearing aids.  You may encounter a hearing aid specialist or an audiologist depending on where you go to receive your hearing healthcare.  Hearing aid specialists may be found working in a clinical setting or at a hearing aid retail location.

A hearing aid specialist is also known as a hearing aid dispenser or hearing instrument specialist (HIS).  They may be board certified and have the letters BC-HIS (Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist) after their name.  State requirements to become a hearing aid specialist vary from state to state.  Often the provider must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma, have some formal training in the field or be mentored, and pass a state written and practical exam.  For more information, check out the link HERE to find your state’s hearing aid dispensing board website.

Hearing Aid Specialist vs Audiologist

A hearing aid specialist can test an adult’s hearing and fit hearing aids, however children must be referred to an audiologist.  An audiologist, also referred to as a doctor of audiology, can provide comprehensive care for hearing loss across all ages and degrees of severity.  For more information on how an audiologist can help you, check out the post “What is an Audiologist?”  Ask your physician for a referral to a hearing care professional in your area.
