Hi, I’m Dr. Derek – audiologist, audio engineer, and musician with Pro Fit Hearing.com bringing you the best insight in today’s latest hearing aids, headphones, and audio technology to improve your life. If you have concerns about your hearing, always consult with your local physician or audiologist.
Today, I’ll have a hearing loss simulation so that you can hopefully have a better appreciation for what it’s like to live with hearing loss. In today’s simulation, I’ll have a speech sample as perceived by someone with gradually sloping high frequency hearing loss. SEE VIDEO SIMULATION ABOVE.
Hearing Loss Simulation Text
“Hearing loss can significantly impact our ability to understand conversational speech. High frequency hearing loss specifically impacts the perception of consonants which are responsible for speech clarity and understanding. Treatment with a hearing aid can help make these important sounds more audible so that you can understand and communicate more effectively.”
I hope you can now better appreciate how hearing loss can impact a person’s ability to understand speech and conversation. The samples we listened to today were recorded in quiet. Unfortunately, a person’s ability to understand speech is regularly impacted by noise, distance, and lack of visual cues. These other factors will make it even more difficult to understand what someone is saying when you have hearing loss.
So, to hear your best try to reduce background noise, sit closer, and face the person you’re speaking to. If you or someone you know is experiencing hearing difficulty, see a local audiologist today. Click HERE for an audiologist directory.
If you are a hearing aid candidate, hearing aids can significantly improve your ability to understand speech. Hearing aids are customized to your degree of hearing loss and are digitally programmed to suit your needs.
